The Original IdeasMichael's goal when writing Angel Wings was to write a loose, unorganized screenplay without using an outline or formal structure. He had a few ideas, plus a working title, Easy. (Don't ask where it came from, he doesn't remember.) The ideas were just a few short paragraphs to provide a springboard for the improvisation he later undertook while writing the script. Here they are, with elements that were not used or deleted in blue text. Original idea: Untitled Girl on a train makes a cell phone call to her boyfriend. She tells him about her trip, and how she can't wait to see him again. A young man sitting across from her silently chomps on sunflower seeds. He watches her conversation intently, unable to hear what she's saying due to the headphones he's wearing. Loud music thumps in his ears. When the train arrives, they go their separate ways. The man checks into a motel and unpacks his duffel bags: they're full of guns, automatic and "classics." He studies a map of the city to orient himself. The man meets with a friend of his, who he hasn't seen in several years. He trades a gun to his friend for a box of ammunition, some drugs, and one hundred dollars cash. He spends the money on a prostitute, whom he takes back to his motel room and does the drugs with, among other things.
Second idea: Easy A boy stands on the roof of his house, about to jump off. His older sister tries to persuade him not to, but breaks his fall when he does. She breaks her arm, he gets knocked unconscious. A woman and a man each ride, alone, on a bus into the city. They each depart, never noticing each other. The man checks into a cheap hotel, makes a few phone calls, then buys drugs and hires a prostitute. The woman shares a cab to her hotel with two young women heading to a party. They invite her to come to the party. The woman goes to the party, but doesn't stay long. The woman meets with the parents of the little boy. They hire her to cure him of his belief that he's an angel and can fly. She meets the little boy and then accepts her first paycheck. The woman goes to the bank and deposits the check. As she leaves the bank, she passes the man, who is scouting out the bank.
